A Flag Woman. A Calypso Muse. A Matriarch.
We pause to honour the life of Valarie Green, who passed away on September 19, 2025.
Known and beloved as the widow of calypso icon Aldwyn “Lord Kitchener” Roberts, Valerie was much more than a footnote in musical history—she was a vibrant part of its rhythm. In the golden age of calypso, she became one of the most recognisable flag women of the 1970s, famously inspiring Kitchener’s anthem Flag Woman and gracing stages with poise, pride, and power.
Together, Valerie and Kitchener raised four children—Christian, Kernal, Quweina, and Kirnister—each of whom carries her strength and spirit in their own way. Kernal Roberts, in particular, continues their musical legacy, shaping the soundscape of calypso and soca for new generations.
As we reflect on her life, we remember Valerie not only as a partner to a legend, but as a legend in her own right—a woman who waved her flag with joy, loved deeply, and lived with unmistakable fire.
May her memory forever dance in the rhythm of our hearts.
Rest well, Valerie.
