Joycelyn Sandy

Joycelyn Sandy, died at her residence at Silk Cotton Trace, Bon Accord, Tobago on August 31st.
Joycelyn grew up and lived most of her life in Bon- Accord Tobago with her parents and siblings. There she met and married the love of her life the late Esmy Sandy (Tobago Sandy). Together they shared seven wonderful children. Joycelyn migrated to the United States, and lived there for eleven years, thus paving the way for most her children who now reside there.

Joycelyn always spoke of her elementary school days at the Bon Accord Government School where she loved playing netball. Unfortunately, she had to leave school at a tender age to help her mom, , Rachel Gray who had a parlor and her grandmother, Pity Chapman who was an exceptional baker in those days. I guess this was an excellent decision as it paid off in the end. She became an excellent cook and baker.

Mummy always said, “Anything with flour these hands could make.” Many enjoyed her coconut, soda tarts, corn and sweet potato pone and the “bomb” her famous black cake. My dad used to tell her, why she doesn’t open a cooking school as most people sought her opinion and advice whenever they wanted to prepare a dish or bake goods.
Mummy was one of the pioneers who started the selling of benne balls (sesame seed ball) at the old Crown Point airport together with other candies. There she was also a favorite for her juicy, red mango, and plum, and papaya (lime) balls.
Back in the good old days, Joycelyn, loved going to weddings and funerals to cook. You couldn’t ‘mess’ with her when she was in the kitchen. She was the boss.

Mom enjoyed talking to her kids and grandkids on the phone. We all marveled how she maneuvered switching back and forth to video and voice call. We all looked forward to her daily calls to chit chat, ask for an advice, a date about an event, or someone’s death or birthday (mom remembered everything) or just to complain about each other. Her phone calls are already missed by all of us. And a void that cannot be filled.

Rest in Peace Mom, Time Joyce.
