In Loving Memory of His Holiness, Pope Francis
December 17, 1936 – April 21, 2025
Today, we gather in spirit to honor the life and legacy of a humble shepherd, His Holiness, Pope Francis.
Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he would go on to transform the heart of the Catholic Church and touch the lives of millions across the world. Ordained a priest in 1969, he spent his early ministry walking alongside the poor and the forgotten, never losing sight of the simple, profound call to love and to serve.
In 1998, he was appointed Archbishop of Buenos Aires, and in 2001, elevated to cardinal by Pope John Paul II. Yet it was on March 13, 2013, when he was elected as the 266th pope, that he would take a name and a path that spoke to his soul, Francis, after Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron of humility, peace, and care for creation.
Pope Francis was a light in a world that often felt heavy with division and despair. He taught us that greatness is found in service, that true leadership is born of compassion, and that the heart of the Gospel is mercy. He opened wide the doors of the Church to the broken, the lost, and the searching, reminding us always that in God’s eyes, no one is ever truly forgotten.
His voice rang out for the poor, the refugee, the earth itself, calling humanity to a greater tenderness and responsibility. In the softest of words and the boldest of actions, he showed us that faith is not a fortress to defend, but a bridge to build.
Though his earthly pilgrimage has ended, Pope Francis’ spirit lives on, in the hands that reach out to the lonely, in the hearts that forgive when it is hardest, and in the courage to believe that love is stronger than fear.
We give thanks for the gift of his life, and we carry forward the flame of his witness: to be people of peace, to be voices for the voiceless, and to walk always with humility and hope.
